Great idea.
However, where are principals of the girls schools of Crown – Hights? Why they are not mentioned in this letter?
After all, zneus is also for girls and women?
Beside mother’s role teacher, principal’s and educators are number 1 girls look up to. These people must take responsibility for being true znius role models for our daughters when they decide to be in the education system.
If an educator feels it is too much to ask then don’t take the position.

How long did you think through what you wrote before posting it? How should a woman take care of tasks like grocery shopping, taking children to doctor appointments etc,, or miztvos like bikur cholim, if she is only supposed to go out of the house once or twice a month? And who will be the morahs for the girls if no woman is allowed out of the house more than once or twice a month? And what about an unmarried woman with no parents or siblings, who has to support herself? Maybe you prefer the system in Saudi Arabia where… Read more »

Rocking the boat.
November 18, 2012 9:46 pm

The authorities in Crown Heights schools don’t go for the juglar in terms of strong policies, simply because they fear rocking their own boats. Most of our institutions practice blind nepotism (i.e. familial hiring and not firing, even in the face uncontested child abuse) as well, they participate in the gross under-education of our children. So whatever.

agree 100%. they can send one thousand letters one after the other… but where is everyone when it comes to action… none of the principles etc. have the guts to be assertive when it comes to actually telling someone off?!

letters are good, action is better

but are teachers dressing according to halacha?

what is being done to teach and educate and inspire staff of schools?

Its painful to see Jewish women not valuing their Jewishness, not taking pride in their heritage, culture, halacha…

What is being done to help inspire the women of Crown Heights?

Why are principals looking the other way when staff is not dressing according to Halacha?

It should be sent to the entire Anash list, not just parents of school aged children.

Confusion Some of you may have missed the point of the letter. They are not preaching to anyone. They are simply stating – in a very gentle and positive tone – the policy of these schools. Here is the quote: “at the entrance of our schools there will be signs praising the vital role of the women in safeguarding the קדושה of all aspects of Jewish life, followed by guidelines of modest dress and the appropriate way to enter our מוסדות חינוך – our מקומות קדושים. As you have spent a significant portion of your life in the secular world, I am deeply disappointed and disturbed that you seem to equate all Gentiles with armed robbery and “gossip magazines.” Your choice of the word “goyishe” to describe such things doesn’t acknowledge that an armed robber is an individual human being making a series of decisions that don’t speak for 99 percent of so-called “goyim.” There aren’t two cultures in the world- Orthodox Judaism and the homogenous stew of immorality in which everyone else lives. Every non-Jew isn’t digging through skimpy clothing magazines trying to figure out… Read more »

LETS FACE THE FACTS
November 15, 2012 8:42 am

When a women dresses untzniusdig and is nichshol a man, she will have to answer for each incident after 120. The issue about “men” writing this letter will be known as looking for an excuse. Our Shulchan Orech was also written by a man. Let’s face it. Everyone KNOWS that too many Chabad women, the world over, have a major problem with dressing according to Halachah. The women know it too. For some reason, this seems to be the challenge of the day. Educate, educate, educate. Mommys, your job is to stand up and be a mommy. Zero tolerance for… Read more »

November 15, 2012 1:40 am

i suggest that rabonim, not menahalim, address the issue of texting as well. men and women who are not married to each other are texting eachother and do find anything wrong with it. don’t you think that their children are doing the same?

Wawwo! But very unfortunately true many times in Crown Heights. sometimes there is some similarity between the non tznioos girls/ women, in the way they dress and use accessories . I feel like there is some bug going on, where concept such as ‘FASHION’ , ‘ LOOKING RICH’ , ‘ I AM A GROWN UP AND INDIPENDENT’ and ‘I AM UNIQUE’ are taking over the REBBES DIRECTION FOR BAS MELECH. November 14, 2012 9:38 pm

November 14, 2012 9:32 pm

Yes there is a problem, and in theory for rabbies to encourage people to be better is a great thing, but they need to fix it at the source, they need to look at themselves in the mirror, they created a monster and now they are afraid and dont know what to do about it.

A school that does not allow kids into school for any reasaon does this NOT in accordance with the Rebbe’s Shita. Story: (Rabbi Lustig can confirm). Years ago, OT wanted to enact a rule that any families that have TV’s would not allow to enroll their children in OT. The Rebbe was asked. He deferred to Rabbi Hodakov who ‘in matters of Chinuch had Hoirois from the Shver’. Rabbi Hodakov said that it was not the shita of the Frierdiker Rebbe to penalize kids for the actions (or inaction) of their parents. There was a time when, with the strong… Read more »

One of the solutuons I believe, is that if older parents and teachers would send their children

What you say is correct, but also very cruel!! Do you think these relatives make them proud? Why pick on them in public? If they themselves were not Tznius, we have a right to say something, but unfortunately, people don’t have control of others, even their own children. Please be more sensitive to others before commenting.

Internal Issue
November 14, 2012 4:56 pm

The is an external response to an internal issue.
Tznius is a reflection of the inside. What has to change is the point of reference is it Hollywood/magazines/secular role models or our Torah. That is the issue. This must be addressed and it will take a generation. There are no band-aids solutions.

I think the teachers must also dress tzniusly outside of school. At Kaporas my granddaughter’s Morah came over to say hello and was clad in bare legs and a low cut neckline with her elbows in full view. My granddaughter goes to Bas Rivkah and is in the head start program. While in class she wears long skirts and is covered . “let”. Are you kidding me! The day a husband tells his wife he does not “alllow” her to do something…it will backfire.

There are other ways of ENCOURAGING tznius rather than salivating over a tight skirt, or encouraging to purchase a skirt that is just too short…because it looks good in the dressing room.

Instead something like… “wow, you look amazing! Too bad it’s too short…wow, it really does look so good on you.” That works on me. Find what works and go with it.

But please, let’s not talk about men “allowing” anything.

Where are peoples priorities.

“Please get out of our closets.” First they have to clean out the skeletons.

The real problem...
November 14, 2012 2:47 pm

You all seem to be overlooking one tiny fact: Women dress in a way that their husbands like. Maybe we need to teach the MEN in our community that some things are better kept private…

November 14, 2012 2:45 pm

And it’s not just that…men also play a part in influencing how their wives dress. And, like marries like…. Men are an important part in preserving tznius. How about a chatan who doesn’t like curly sheitels and tight clothes? Or if all the bochurim out there only marry tznius girls, and insist that they STAY tznius? Etc. etc….

they are not judging or condemning anyone they are just reiterating what our holy rabbis and sages have taught us
and just by the way, not sure if you understood the last line of the letter doesn’t that make you feel good!!

November 14, 2012 2:25 pm

theres a bigger issue here… when are the Rabbis going to come down on the men who dress fashionably and drive the latest foreign cars??? why only coming down on the women???

November 14, 2012 2:25 pm

Tznuis does not mean excluding women from leadership positions. Yes it does.

“Shame…I personally find it offensive for men to sit in judgement of women without women being included. ”

What can you do about it, seriously?

November 14, 2012 2:23 pm

So, for tznius the schools can come together in achdus. There are more pressing issues than lecturing adult women to make them feel like 4 year olds. How about uniting to confront the dismal Crown Heights schools curriculum, uniting to provide better training for ALL teachers, not just those who care to show up to a seminar, uniting to teach proper Derech Eretz and provide a well rounded education to our children. How about uniting to provide options for the smarter students. There is a lot to be worked on, stop making tznius the main concern. Please get out of… Read more »

Achdus
November 14, 2012 2:23 pm

I would have appreciated the letter better if it stopped at Achdus. That would have been a nice proactive initiative the community can use. Why make everything about Tznius?

Nice letter
November 14, 2012 2:02 pm

Nice letter, but can I recommend that aside from a letter, the schools should put a zero tolerance policy in the schools. If they would crack down on all the parents and not allow them into the school buildings untzniusdik, parents may think twice when they get dressed in the morning. Once they are wearing their sheitel and tznius clothing, would it be worth it to go home and change, only to have to change again when picking up the kids? This will cause there to be more tzniusdike people on the streets. Mitoch sheloh lishma…

November 14, 2012 2:01 pm

well well well maybe we should stop talking and looking at the women, and start looking some the men. i was walking sunday on a street, and a father was wating for his daughter to come off the bus. and what saw bothered me, the father was wereing light colored jeans and a pink shirt. that is just as bad as anything you see in bad tznus by women. or when you see men in the park wearing shorts, i am a runner and i never saw the real need to wear short pants. you may laugh, but men and… Read more »

Jewish and Chassidish Pride
November 14, 2012 1:57 pm

Letters can be written
students can be smitten
principals can scream
Teachers can dream

As long as there is pride in what we do
our students and parents will feel it too
They will dress accordingly
Proud to be Chassidim of the Rebbe and a Jew!

(Why oh why are Men writing a letter about women?)

#10 assume your married ,assume your husband says Eishis Chayel… Kol Bas Melech …..
That is precisely the problem…. Yes Men …. RABBI’S actually signed it… since when do you “LADIES”..think you have to sign everything… run for Vad Hakol..
If you did your job… and be true Yiddshe Mamehs we wouldnt have this problem….
CHILDREN NEED MOTHERS AT HOME…..NOT POLITICIANS

B”H The level of tznius in our community is an outrage to Chabad. I am sick and tired of seeing women’s erva, and red polished toe nails. All I want to do is do my Erev Shabbos grocery shopping in peace without covering not only my eyes but the eyes of my innocent kinderlach. The level of tznius has dropped tremendously it’s appalling. Doesn’t anyone wear tights anymore?! Yesterday I walked into Bunch O’ Bagels for my morning boost. I went in line and a lady standing in front of me forgot her skirt at home!!! Hide your kids, hide… Read more »

I didn’t even read the letter, but i guess the letter was all signed by men right?

How naive you. Of course women are singled out. And, is there something wrong with the way men dress?

beautiful

May all that adhere to this letter be blessed

thank you to those involved
November 14, 2012 1:43 pm

may it make an active visual change

Why are only men signing the letter?
November 14, 2012 1:36 pm

Why are our women leaders not signing the letter-Mrs. Tecihtel, Mrs. Gurwitz just to name a few.Tznuis does not mean excluding women from leadership positions.
Shame…I personally find it offensive for men to sit in judgement of women without women being included.

Dear # 1…unfortunately, you might be right.
Beautiful letter…very beautiful and true.
‘The fish stinks from the head down.’
Somebody, nobody, is to blame for the problem with our ‘beis din.’
When things straighten out there, perhaps this will have a salutary and healing affect on our community?

It is “De” Velt – not “Der” velt…!

Great start -- MEN included in same letter!?!?
November 14, 2012 12:28 pm

These are all true —
However, looks like women are being singled out .

Husbands and men have been tolerating it for years, and it’s of extreme importance that it’s not a one-sided responsibility. Sure, women are of utmost priority, here, but for BEST results, there should be at least a few lines included to hold men to a certain set of standards in the SAME letter, as well!

Beautiful
November 14, 2012 12:18 pm

What a beautiful letter and incredible initiative.

But what a slanted way to report it collive…

So sad
November 14, 2012 12:15 pm

What has become of Chabad.
Problem is the people who don’t keep the halachos of tznius will not be affected by a letter or anything written by people they consider nerds and close minded or way too frum.
