An El Al flight en route from Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport to New York made an emergency landing in Ireland on Monday, after smoke was detected in the airplane’s passenger compartment.
Flight 007 had taken off from Israel on a Boeing 747-400 with 320 passengers and crew on board. Six hours after takeoff, a passenger smelled something burning, causing suspicion among the crew that a fire broke out on board.
The captain subsequently decided to land the plane at Shannon Airport in Ireland.
Among the passengers were several Shluchim who were traveling to New York to participate in the worldwide Kinus Hashluchim which begins later this week.
Rabbi Yisroel Goldberg, Shliach in the Rechavia section of Jerusalem, was one of those Shluchim on board, and told COLlive he is thankful to G-d that he is safe and sound.
“It was extremely frightening,” he says. “We had no idea what was going on at first. All of a sudden they announced that there’s a smell of smoke, and they need to make an emergency landing.
“People were praying and saying Tehillim, everyone was really afraid.”
A half hour later, the aircraft landed safely and no one was injured. After the landing, Goldberg says, a number of Orthodox passengers, including Shliach Or Ziv of Katamon, Israel, began helping some of the others put on Tefillin.
“The other passengers were very moved by the scene,” said Goldberg.
The passengers were taken by bus to a local hotel and another aircraft was sent from Israel to take the passengers to New York.
“We felt after we landed safely that we experienced a miracle from G-d,” said Goldberg. “In moments like these we realize we can only rely on Hashem – that emunah in G-d is the only thing we have. Our Rebbes point out the importance of thanking G-d after such an event, and this hastens the coming of Moshiach.”

I simply do not see where in the story it says it was such a big ‘sucono.’ If it were a smoldering bomb, like the ‘shoe bomber,’ that’s something else. What if it was a cigarette…etc. as I stated? They smelled smoke – someone was smoking. People got scared. They started doing mitzvos. WOW, all because someone smoked on the airplane!!

and Thank God it’s over. All passengers are in good hands with EL AL… Somewhere in this company logo name is Hashem’s name, so let it be for a good simmin. After the initial terrifying shivering of one’s very core being, an added adrelanin higher than nature kicks in and a person is ready for the worst… he submits his neshama to whatever Hashem has planned for him / her in the next few minutes… This is truly a remarkable day for these passengers. They were VOTED in for life.
I could not agree more… everything is a miracle..and sometimes, you will see a miracle in your face and say no big deal… Just nature. To # 3 do you have a child ? Thats a Miracle… nature is the worlds way of denying Hashems Hand…I suggest you work on your Emunah and Bitachon…

What was “The miracle from G-d?”
If someone, say, smoked a cigarette in the bathroom, and a small, harmless fire occurred in, a metal sink, why is it a “miracle from G-d?”
G-d is capable of bigger miracles.
If it makes them feel good to say it…fine…feel good.
Man, was this crew ever lucky to be within landing range of Ireland. Imagine if the smoke was detected well into the flight over the Atlantic Ocean… the pilot would have had to keep going to Newfoundland to land, which could have been 4 more hours away!!!!!!
Especially EL AL, the most secure, uneventful Airline carrier with a proven unbeatable track record. Let’s see what the investigation comes up with. I can only imagine it to be a hand held battery appliance switched on or something like that.
