Bigwig Lawyer Takes Halevi Case

COLlive exclusive: High-profile civil rights lawyer Norman Siegel took the case of Ehud Halevi who was brutally beaten by cops.

By COLlive reporter

Noted New York civil rights and civil liberties lawyer Norman Siegel has agreed to take on the case of Ehud Halevi, the young man who was brutally beaten by 2 NYPD officers.

Following a 2 hour meeting Tuesday, Siegel said he and his associates at Siegel Teitelbaum & Evans, LLP will be providing legal defense to Halevi on criminal and civil matters.

"It is an honor to be representing Mr. Halevi," Siegel, former director of the ACLU affiliate - New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), told COLlive.com. "Our goal is to achieve justice and accountability."

Elected officials and Jewish activists have called for a full investigation into the conduct of officers Luis A. Vega and Yelena Bruzzese after security camera footage surfaced of them beating Halevi on the holiday of Shmini Atzeres at the Aliya Institute in Crown Heights.

The shocking video was posted by COLlive.com on Sunday night and has since been reported about in the general media, along with other copies of the video posted on Youtube.com.

"What is good in this situation is that we have video," Siegel said. "The (police) report said that he was criminally trespassing - not true. He had permission to be there. The report says he assaulted an officer - again, not true, as can be seen on the video."

After the repeated beating on October 8, the 21-year-old unarmed Halevi remained incarcerated for 4 days, which Siegel sees as another violation of his rights.

"We call on the Brooklyn attorney's office to dismiss all criminal charges and to focus not on Mr. Halevi but the police conduct," said the attorney who took the case with his colleagues Herbert Teitelbaum and Saralee Evans.

"The officers exhibited unjustified excessiveness on my client resulting in a horrific experience that continues to have an effect on him," added Siegel who was raised in Boro Park and is often mentioned in the New York press.

In a statement Tuesday, U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke of Brooklyn called for an oversight of the NYPD by an independent Inspector General.

“This violent behavior calls into question the extent to which our City’s police officers, when responding to citizens in distress, are trained," she said.

"The relationship between the NYPD and communities of New York City becomes fractured when officers threaten the safety of the people they are sworn to protect.

"The number of instances in which police have failed in their duty to protect and serve, such as this attack and the misuse of Stop and Frisk policies, demonstrates a need for reform."

"We must make sure this doesn't ever happen again," added Siegel.

Looks as clear as day
...but beware of the rule of unintended consequences. The ACLU is a Pandora's box of the above.

Excellent choice!
It is about time the liberal institution protects ALL victims equally. Hope Ehud is compensated royally. Are the corrupt cops going to be held accountable for perjury? Oh and the physician who diagnosed the "sprained wrist" should find a different day job.

IT HAPPENS OFTEN!
A few months back I personally witnessed an angry-as-he-- cop pull over a car of Jewish kids. It was dark and on a quiet street. The cop did not know anyone was watching as he pulled the teenage driver from the car and SLAMMED (no exaggeration!) his head INTO THE HOOD OF THE CAR REPEATEDLY. The other kids looked petrified, and I was horrified, almost sobbing, but did not manage to video it a) in time b) bec of the dark. It turned into a bit of a scene when he called for backup, and the other kids texted their parents who started to arrive. I was told the c was furious bec the kids had been driving and leaning out the windows (bygone of the kids fathers). So why did that enrage him? Or was it that they didn't take him too seriously enough?? Or did he have a son who died in such a way? Frankly I dont give a darn WHAT his baggage reasoning was, and the driver did not have to suffer so as a result. Ticket the kids, suspend a license, but bashing his head in??? How I wish I'd videod. But what's saddest is that while I called the drivers father and told him what I saw, offering to b an anonymous (to the cops) witness if needed, they did not seek to investigate, press charges or anything, likely out of fear (just as I did not want the cop to see that I saw the whole thing from my window as he'd know my address and I don't trust them for a second! They'd do ANYthing to protect themselves), and possibly also preceding to settle the brutal behavior quietly so that their son would have no criminal record if they chose to arrest him.... Justifiably or not. I'm scared ofthe cops, and I'm obviously nit alone. What a scary world this is....

Do you have any sense at all? You want someone to bleed before you call it excessive force???Overated? Good.Lets hope it happens to you or a relative perhaps. Then you can talk big shot

No, as far as we KNOW/can see no blood was drawn. Are you a doctor though?? Or more likely a defensive cop... It's quite likely to cause internal bleeding (more dangerous even) and broken bones/ribs from such! Don't judge by the kids subdued reaction how bad this was (and it was!) and well try not to judge too harshly the pathetic incompetent and weak cop who bashed the heck out of this boy and then was spineless enough to go and cry about a broken wrist!!! What a baby and a fool! These weaklings protect us? He broke his wrist (if that is not just another falsehood in his lying claims to defend his horrific behavior) precisely because of what he did with it! Clearly he doesn't know a thing about how to fight...no way I would've broken anything when fighting such a docile subject!

Great move! Norman has name recognition and will command respect and gets ppl's attention to this case....now we need a legal team to sue the NYPD, DA's office and NYC for allowing this abuse to go on for 20-30 yrs! Bring in the federal justice system, and break this cycle of abuse.

Thanks to Eli Federman
I heard that Eli Federman was the one who was behind the case, asking his good friend lawyer Norman Seigal to take the case. I also heard that Mr. Eli Federman himself did a lot of leg work and investigations in that regard. Justice is his priorities.
