Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, hosted a pre-Rosh Hashanah reception for American Jewish leaders on Tuesday.
Held the at the Vice President’s Residence, at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, the event featured Glatt Kosher reception and cocktails.
Jewish leaders praised the opportunity for outreach, particularly following what many saw as a year marked by tensions over differences with Israel over settlement building.
Rabbi Levi Shemtov, Director of American Friends of Lubavitch, and his wife Nechama Shemtov were one of about 80 guests. Israeli U.S. Ambassador Michael Oren was also in attendance.
“It is important at times to get together in situations where policy is temporarily secondary and the main focus is on good relations and communications,” Rabbi Shemtov told JTA.
Biden warmly greeted Shemtov and said he was delighted to have met his peers at the White House reception during the Living Legacy Conference in honor of Gimmel Tammuz earlier this year.
Biden is a personal friend of the Philadelphia-based Rabbi Avrohom Shemtov, executive chairman of Agudas Chassidei Chabad International, umbrella organization of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
A longtime admirer of the Jewish community, the Vice President asked Rabbi Levi Shemtov to convey his and his family’s best wishes for a “Shana Tova.”
the rebbe loves your work keep keep kep it up
On erev Rosh Hashanah to put all the cooking and speech making aside to go to such an event is mamash mesirus nefesh. These shluchim are true soldiers who do what has to be done regardless of the hardship, discomfort or convenience.
They should be commended for their work and perhaps a special mention at the kinus hashluchim.
these shlichum are trully given over to their shlichus keep it up
Keep up the great work at being the Rebbe’s Shliach!!
