The Glenmorangie Company and Moet Hennessy USA announced today that Glenmorangie Original, Scotland’s favorite single malt, has become kosher certified by the Orthodox Union (OU), the world’s largest and most respected kosher certification agency. Additionally, its pioneering new expression, Glenmorangie Astar, has also become kosher-certified.
The company is one of the most renowned and innovative distillers and marketers of Scotch whiskey brands worldwide and is part of Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH). New packaging and promotional materials bearing the OU symbol will be distributed nationwide beginning in the next few months.
“We take great pride in producing Scotland’s favorite single malt whisky, using the finest Scottish barley and hand-selected American white oak casks of only the highest quality. The OU Kosher certification will bring our iconic brand to an entirely new consumer base that can now enjoy our products,” said Brian Cox, USA Brand Director, Glenmorangie.
“The OU rigorously monitors of all aspects of production. It supervises the process by which the whisky is created, examines the raw ingredients used to make Glenmorangie and regularly inspects the distilling and bottling facilities to make sure that its standards are met,” explained Mr. Cox.
“We are very pleased to have Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky become the first major single malt scotch brand to attain OU certification,” said Rabbi Eliyahu Safran, OU Kosher’s Vice President of Communications and Marketing. “It was also gratifying for the OU to guide the Glenmorangie company through the certification process and bring this famous Single Malt brand to the growing kosher market place. It was rewarding for OU Kosher’s team, headed by Rabbi Nachum Rabinowitz and Dr. Avraham Meyer, to collaborate with the Glenmorangie team to bring these renowned products to an ever-growing kosher market place.”
Whatever the (de)merits of a hechsher on this product, please do NOT feed into the “kosher tax” fringe nuts who claim that kashrus supervision raises prices. The price is petty cash to the huge firm that owns the distillery, and because kosher restaurants and caterers etc will insist on the supervised bottles, it will raise sales.
SCAM?
why is it a scam? just people will feel more comfortable buying it if it has a hechsher …
and for the company it is a way to market it to the frum world.
Could COL contact Rabbi Landau for his opinion on this?
Drinking should not be taken advantage of…
Just a comment that i feel is necessary to post on an article like this!
I agree with #9 nearly all single malt do not need a hechsher it is only a money making scam and by the way will bottels here in THE U.K. have a hechsher ???????????? I dont think so if yes dose this mean that the ones with a hechsher come from the USA after being prodused in the UK shiped to USA then shipped to UK so the one with hechsher will cost twice AS MUCH
what are you on?
if you saw what soda does to your body…
…..will quite often turn an otherwise-well-behaved-guy into a very off-puting beast.
Only “Glendreck Single Spill” from Glendreck Distilleries in Rockland County, is considered 100% kosher. That is because it is distilled from oil salvaged from the spill off Louisiana and is in no way subject to aging or to any halachas concerning chometz sheovor alav haPesach. I highly recommend it.
Rav Landa does not necessarily accept any product approved by the OU. To the best of my knowledge, he does not accept US Coca Cola which is under the OU any more than he accepts European Coca Cola that is not under any certification.
great question – does it need a hechsher
do 90% of the items that have a hechsher need one?
I thought Rav Landau from Bnei Brak had some serious concerns with Scotch being in wine barrels. Does anyone know if this hechsher is OK’d with Rav Landau?
Will the OU certificate those malts which have been matured
or double matured in Sherry, Port and other wine casks?
I can go along with malts which do not boast wine or sherry cask maturation. If the production states clearly that there are hints of sherry or sweetness in either the taste or nose, surely this is sufficient to condemn such production!
I
Single malt whiskey does not need a Hechsher.
Some Poskim say that if it is distilled in Sherry Casks it may be problematic. But if distilled in standard casks (usually oak casks used first to distill American Bourbon) it categorically does not need a Hechsher.
This is a money making scheme by OU.
why make it ou .drinking is bad for you . it kills meny brain cell. and i want you to know that you can make a lechiem on soda. so meny ppl drink and lots of bad thing come out of it.
Whoops
