Jerusalem – Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, a Torah giant who was Israel’s Chief Sefardic Rabbi until 1993, has passed away at the age of 81.
Rabbi Eliyahu has been in poor health and very painful condition for more than a year.
Two weeks ago, tens of thousands of people gathered in three different locations to pray for Rabbi Eliyahu’s health, following a similar deterioration.
His son, Tzfat’s Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, told Arutz-7’s “Preparing for Redemption” radio program at that time, “The situation is not good. Ever since last Elul [August], the rabbi has been in the emergency room, and is undergoing terrible suffering. The very fact of his long hospitalization leads to a slow deterioration; sores open, close, open… things are going backward instead of forward.”
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu was born in 1929 in the Old City of Jerusalem; his mother was a granddaughter of the famed Ben Ish Chai. He served as Israel’s Chief Sephardic Rabbi – the Rishon LeTzion – from 1983 until 1993, together with the late Rabbi Avraham Shapira, and the two continued for years afterwards to lead the national-religious public in matters of Jewish Law and thought. He is the author of several works on both.
i heard that before Mordechai Eliyahu passed away he said that Moshiach is here and 2 rabbis know who he is……
i also heard that Baba Salis watch is now at 12.00….
apparently the year 5770 is the year that Moshiach will reveal himself
lets be positive and be kind to all mankind so that he comes already…..

i was devastated to hear about his death. He was one of the greatest Rabbanim that I ever knew. may Moshiach come and end death in this world.
The first person to speak at the levaya yesterday was the Baba Sali’s son, Baruch. He said that 2 days before he was niftar he suddenly woke up and said there was a terrible gzera against am yisrael, but he was able to nullify it — he gave up the promise to see Mashiach come, for the sake of Am Yisrael!
may he rest in peace and be a melitz yosher for all of us . I will miss him Boruch dayan hoemes. May Moshiach come and end death in this world

I remember seing him arrive at the Ohel on Gimmel Tammuz 5754 as I was leaving. We nodded to him to show respect, and I was surprised when he nodded back to us with equal respect.
