The Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV) recently held a youth focused reception to celebrate and encourage the involvement of young people in the Jewish community.
Held at the offices of Bank Leumi overlooking the St Kilda Road boulevard, the private function was attended by over fifty guests, including Rabbis, youth leaders, prominent entrepreneurs and long-standing community activists.
One of the RCV’s exciting initiatives in 2010 focuses on encouraging young members of the Jewish community to remain involved in Jewish life even after they leave structured frameworks such as schools or youth movements and enter into the so-called ‘real world’.
Addressing the guests, RCV President Rabbi Yaakov Glasman stated that “one of the great challenges facing not only the Jewish community, but many ethnic and religious communities throughout Victoria, is the generation gap between the ages of about 21 and 35, when young people seem to disappear from community life. However, this does not need to be an inevitable result of commencing employment or starting a family,” he said.
Acknowledging the presence of some of the stalwarts of Melbourne’s Jewish community, Rabbi Glasman said that “there are many people here who have managed to successfully find a balance between their commitment to the community and their busy personal and professional lives”.
Throughout the evening, the youth leaders present took advantage of the opportunity to engage with some of the Jewish community’s most significant activists and supporters and to learn about the importance of remaining connected and involved beyond school or university.
Among the guests, the RCV was honoured to host The Honourable James Merlino MP, Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs.
Minister Merlino addressed the guests and presented Rabbi Glasman with a grant cheque to the value of $116,000 to extend the Victorian government’s ongoing support of the RCV.
Explaining the purpose of the funding, the Minister stated that “it will assist the RCV to continue to develop programs that will add great value not only to the Jewish community but to Victoria as a whole.”
In thanking the Minister, Rabbi Glasman said that “the RCV is keen to implement a number of exciting projects in the coming months and to put to good use the generous funding received from the Victorian government. We are particularly thankful to the Victorian Multicultural Commission and its Chairperson George Lekakis and Deputy Chairperson Hakan Akyol, whose involvement with and recognition of the RCV’s work are pivotal to the success of many of the RCV’s projects,” he said.
Rabbi Glasman also paid tribute to the RCV’s Immediate Past President, Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant, for his outstanding contribution to the Rabbinical Council, stating that “Rabbi Kluwgant has unquestionably been the backbone of our organization over the past five years and through his exemplary efforts laid the foundation for the excellent relationship that is currently enjoyed between the RCV and the Victorian Government. His efforts are to be applauded.”
