Congregants of the Empire Shtible and other Crown Heights residents filled the Brooklyn Shul Sunday night to pay tribute to their rabbi.
Rabbi Lipa Schapiro, member of Vaad Rabonei Lubavitch and Rav of the shul, passed away 28 Adar 5770 at the age of 97.
The emcee of the Shloshim gathering was Rabbi Simcha Piekarski.
Four of his children, Rabbis Sholom Ber, Leibel, Gavriel and Nochum spoke about their father’s years in the Soviet Union, learning in underground Cheders and later teaching Jewish children.
Other speakers included Rabbi Shmuel Heber, Rabbi Sholom Ber Levin and Rabbi M Rotenstreich, a friend of Rabbi Schapiro.
Guest speakers were two of his students: Rabbi Dovid Helberg, leader of Bais Aizek Tzvi in Boro Park, and Rabbi Shlomo Mandel, dean of Yeshiva of Brooklyn.
