For the next nine days, the restaurateur and political aspirant Peter Doyle will own the contents of the pantries in many Sydney Jewish households.
Mr Doyle, who is not Jewish, signed a contract to take ownership of all the leavened products – including food and alcohol – of thousands of Jews observing Passover. Jewish practice does not allow ownership of anything with leavening agents during the religious festival.
”It’s a legally binding contract. It includes plates, cosmetics, perfume, liquor and anything containing the five grains,” Mr Doyle said.
Whereas once this instruction was taken literally, and observant Jews threw out anything chametz (leavened), now it is done through lawyers.
Mr Doyle paid a nominal sum of $200 for the goods, which include an entire liquor business owned by a Jewish proprietor.
”I have free access to it and I can go into anyone’s home and take what I want,” he said.
But Mr Doyle, who will stand this year for Liberal preselection for the state seat of Vaucluse, does not intend to do so. At the end of Passover he will return the goods.
Mr Doyle made the agreement as a favour to his friend Rabbi Yoram Ulman, who celebrated the first meal of Passover with his family in Bondi last night. During the meal, Passover Seder, the story of the Hebrews’ flight from slavery in Egypt is recounted.
Rabbi Ulman helps Jewish prisoners celebrate and this year about 30 prisoners in NSW jails received kosher-for-Passover meal packs.
oops, I didn’t mean to start a whole heated thing here (though I should have figured)
Thanks #5 for backing me up. I didn’t question that Rabbi Ulman did the right thing just that it’s sad that the paper can paint an incorrect (and confusing) picture and we can’t explain it.
Also, I know Rabbi Ulman is a sweet guy and he’s not into poilitics just doing the right thing…just didn’t think this article would have been up had the other one not been.
You obviously did not understand the comment, To # 7 When quoted “two separate communities” it refers to A. the General Chabad of Sydney, B. the Russian Community. PS Please don’t start a NEW Machlokes on this site by trying to define how large R’ Feldman’s community is, and who is apart of it… the argument is old and it stinks. BH over the past long while Chabad Lubavitch of Sydney has prospered and blossomed, there is a sense of peace and harmony amongst Anash, the world should not suffer the agony and loss that Sydney did to pull its… Read more »
You worded your comment very wisely stating, “Rabbi’s Feldman and Ulman are good friends and have to separate very large communities.” You are very correct stating that they are separate communities, for one Rabbi and his community believes and publicizes The Rebbe as Moshiach, while the other denies it!
But B”h they are both still good friends as Sydney has so much politics of its own to worry about, no one cares to fight about who Moshiach is.
Crown Heights can learn from this!
wow!
go rabbi ulman!
#1 is right about the chametz sale process. The goy gives a down payment and in the mechira forms it says that within 3 days after pesach he will give the rest of the money for the full value of the chametz. On motzei pesach, the rov buys it back from him for a similiar amount to what he paid. If he decides to keep the chametz, he would have to come up with major $$$ by 25 nissan. Although it is his during pesach, it’s on the assumption that he will pay the full value after yomtov.
I totally agree! Well spoken!
Seems like you know better then this Rav, I think you should give him a call, it also seems you trust a non jewish Newspaper (smh) to give you the details of how this complicated halachik process took place.
In regards to your ridiculous PS…
Rabbi’s Feldman and Ulman are good friends and have to separate very large communities.

I think they simplified the validity of the sale saying he bought it all for $200. If I’m not mistaken the one who buys the chometz signs for the FULL value of the chometz but only pays a small down payment.
PS I find it funny that this story comes out as a “sequel” to the Feldman story as if they’re trying to out do each other…
