In a historic moment for Canadian Jewry, the flagship downtown store of the prestigious Bay Hudson Company hosted Chabad of Markham’s annual Fashion Show with an attendance of close to 500 women.
When King Charles the second founded the company in 1670, it is highly doubtful that he envisioned this group of modern women reciting Tehillim, speaking about supporting abused women and listening to a modern Jewish heroine speak about saving Syrian Jews.
He surely never imagined in his wildest dreams the Jewish fashionable Bubbies and their grandchildren walking down the catwalk in the famous Arcadian ballroom.
On Sunday, March 21, 2010, history was made at Chabad of Markham’s fashion show.
When the women arrived they were ushered up to the eighth floor of the historic landmark store and were treated to cocktails and hors devours donated by Tiara Culinary Catering, and Joe Elmaleh, as they socialized in the royal setting.
Participants were then seated in the glamorous Arcadian ballroom, where they were welcomed by MC Erica Ehm, host of Much Music and producer of Yummy mummies. The dynamic and wonderful co-chairs of the event, Allison Solomon and Joanne Herr welcomed the representatives of Asteh and presented them with a plaque and a cheque on behalf of Chabad.
Tehillim was then recited for the those in need by Shira Klasner and Aviva Forer, Rebbetzins in the Chabad of Markham community.
Opening remarks were made by Rebbetzin Goldie Plotkin. She welcomed the women and thanked the outstanding committee. Goldie spoke about her inspiration she received from her grandmother’s experiences in Siberia and how women can make a difference today. She emphasized the leadership roles of women today are changing the course of our history. She then introduced the Guest of Honor, Judy Feld Carr, as a true example of a woman who makes a difference.
Judy mesmerized the audience with her poignant story of her heroic efforts to save nearly 3,000 Syrian Jews. Judy Feld-Carr, a young woman from Sudbury, Ontario had heard about the plight of Syrian Jewish community and how they were being imprisoned and tortured in Syria. Judy raised thousands of dollars and slowly but surely rescued each and every surviving Jewish family and helped bring them to safety.
The crowd was then treated to a fabulous and very entertaining fashion show. “A celebration of the generations,” was the theme of the show, as three generations modeled on the catwalk showing off famous designer clothing in honour of the upcoming holiday of Passover. The colours, the fashion and the music kept the crowd clapping and enamored with the fashion and fun.
“This was the most incredible and uplifting evening I have ever attended,” said one participant.
