Manaus, the most populous city of the state of Amazonas in Brazil, is the new home of recently appointed Chabad Shluchim Rabbi Arieh Raichman and his wife Dvorah Lea.
Together with their son Mendele, they have moved from Crown Heights in Brooklyn to serve the local Jewish community and the many tourists that visit the city situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers.
As a popular ecotourist destination (traveling to an environment relatively untouched by human intervention), among their first activities will be offering Shabbos hospitality and guest accommodations.
In addition, the Raichmans will run a synagogue, an adult education classes, women’s club, kitchen koshering and plan on visiting the Jews in hospitals and senior homes.
They were appointed by Rabbi Disraeli Zagury, Shliach in Belem, Brazil, and assisted by Rabbi Dovid Weitman, Shliach of S. Paulo and Keren Nehor Menachem Fund.
