Yankee Junik – Exclusive to Collive
The Miami-based Chabad House on Wheels has now become a common and welcoming sight for all the residents it visits on a daily basis. Rabbi Zev Katz, founder of the Chabad on Wheels, said that when he started the Chabad ‘mobile command center’ over ten years ago he never imagined the huge impact it would have on the community.
The Mitzvah Tank goes out on Mivtzoim every day, starting on Lincoln Road, throughout the outdoor shopping centers and plazas, weaving through the neighborhood so that all who want will have an opportunity to do a Mitzvah. Residents, shop-owners and even tourists have shown their interest and appreciation for the portable Mitzvah machine.
The Chabad House on Wheels is based in the Chabad House Rabbi Katz operates in Miami Beach. Last year the Chabad House was the victim of an arson hate crime and was severely damaged. Rabbi Katz has told COLlive that a new building has been purchased and the doors of a new Chabad House will soon be open to the public. Until then, Rabbi Katz and his crew have relocated to a storefront not far from the Chabad House.
The recent Superbowl weekend in Miami gave the Chabad House its busiest week in a long time with hundreds of tourists frequenting the Chabad House. Rabbi Katz reported that Mivtza Tefilin reached an all-time high this season with more than 100 people laying Tefilin on average a day.
He says that he cannot take all the credit for his work, and he feels indebted to the Bochurim from the Yeshivah Gedola of Miami. They constantly arrive at the Chabad House and help out with the Mivtzoim, doubling the efforts and the capabilities for success.
