Representatives of the NYC Dept of Design and Construction, Department of Transportation, and the Mayor’s Office came to the offices of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council to listen to community to concerns about the impending rebuilding of Kingston Avenue.
The Chairman and Manager of Community Board 9, as well as representatives of Hatzalah and the Kingston Avenue merchants were also invited.
The Design team listened carefully to all the issues that were raised and promised that there would be a close coordination between the City and the community throughout.
The City reassured the community leaders that, once the contractor is selected and the final planning phase is begun, a full-time on-site liaison would be appointed to deal with any problems that may arise.
Specific items that were discussed included safety, traffic flow, parking, and water service closures. In the course of the replacement of the water mains, each block will experience one or two days when the water will have to be cut off. The City will not permit water to be turned off on Friday or Shabbos.
The work will also be scheduled so as not to disrupt the Yomim Tovim.
A week earlier Jewish Community Council members met with the Deputy Mayor in an effort to cancel the proposal for a bike lane on Kingston Avenue.
In the course of today’s meeting with Department of Transportation representatives it was suggested that for safety reasons the proposed bike lane on Kingston Avenue be moved to another parallel avenue. All parties left the meeting optimistic that the City will cooperate in this matter.

That would be fabulous!!!
JJ Katz is there as 1 of the merchants on kingston ave
is it worth to try?
wow, where does some one come up with such a statement? i would think that the living conditions and livelihood warrants more then the staff attending some over inflated company with enough money to cover up the pollution the cause our “lives” damage. Maybe they should have more people and members at their meetings that can voice concerns for these issues
to 16, kingston is a one lane street. The presence of a bike lane, may in face diminish the double parking situation, which would thus minimize the traffic situation.
the problem with a bike lane is kingston will go from two lane (barely functions as such) to one lane and would make kingston a traffic nightmare (more then it already is!
katz is presenting the merchants or hatzolah ?
can someone please explain to me what is wrong with having a bike line not only is it more green
but it creates more breathing room between sidewalks and cars and a buffer-zone
it does not occur in my mind a hypothesis why there are people here that totally find the idea repulsive
what am i missing here?
The bike lanes have nothing to do with politicians or williamsburge it has to do with the flow of traffic!! Empire is a disaster!! go there between 8:30 and 9:30am and in the afternoon the cars are backed up for blocks because of the bike lane. and no the bike lane does not make the bikers any safer as the cars and trucks double park there!!
its bad enough as it is on Kingston taking away one lain of traffic will just make it worse!!
i am a regular biker who turned fifteen just recently and iwas asked to ride on the street plenty of times but i am too afraid to ride on the streets because of the cars the bike lane would make it safer to use the street and it wont increase traffic backup it hasnt done it on empire and it wont do that on kingston
Can someone explain how a bike lane is “for the politicians? and not for the people?” makes zero sense.. but opposition of bike line is evident that Crown Heights is just a want to be Williamsburgh. If you really want to live in Villiamsburgh, move there..
The merchants were not invited, just Goldstein who represents the merchants association. What will be with simchas Bais Hashoaiva? Today, Albany Ave was closed to cars from E.P. to Union. What about the merchants there on Erev Shabbos?! I gave up on that block today and did my fruit, vegtable and bakery shopping somewhere else.
If you read the last few lines you will see that the ccjcc asked them to REMOVE the bike lane from kingston and they decided try to put it on ANOTHER parallel ave. PPLE read b4 u write a comment! and i have to say finally there is an attempt to talk to the city and the city came to hear!! as for the merchants maybe they were invited but declined to come?!?
Why does everyone look so miserable in these pics? Isn’t there 1 guy who can force a smile about something?
You have probably never been to an exxon mobile quaterly meeting, i can tell you that as a financial analyst for over 30 years (retired now) i have been to such meetings (also when it was juist exxon, before the merger).
Just because you and sam are the only people at the outside venture meetings, doesnt mean that people who care for our community cant all sit down together to discuss a plan to make kingston ave a better and safer place.
Please do everything you can to stop the bike lane on kingston Ave, this would be a disaster!!
thanks.
NO BIKE LANES ON KINGSTON!
THEY NEVER ASKED US THE PEOPLE.
IT’S
BY THE POLITICIANS, FOR THE POLITICIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
where the pastries on the table from gumbos
there are more people at this meeting discussing 6 blocks of kingston then the entire board of Exxon Corporation when they meet quarterly controlling 310billion in annual revenues.
If they really want to help the residents of CH they should change the alternate side parking rules to once a week instead of 2 and on eastern parkway once a week instead of 3 and NOT ON SHABBOS!!
Kingston Avenue merchants ? i dont see any!! in fact i dont see anyone that works in crown heights to represent the working people in CH!!! and when they are done the plan is to make kingston ave into one lane with a bike lane!!
no water for two days????
I don’t see any. the Guys in the red beards i see often on the Ave but thats about it….are they the Merchants?
