The winner of the Jewish Federation’s Community Hero Contest was announced Tuesday: Ari Teman, founder of JCorps and friend of Chabad.
Ari was chosen from five finalists, which included Lubavitchers Devorah Benjamin of Keren Simchas Chosson V’kallah and Rabbi Levi Shemtov, founder of the Friendship Circle.
Teman, a stand-up comedian in New York City, founded JCorps, motivating Jewish young adults into volunteering in their local communities.
Active in four countries and eight cities, the volunteers have fed over 21,000 meals to the hungry and visited hundreds of seniors and sick children.
COLlive profiled Teman as beginning his work while studying at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, where he met Rabbi Peretz Chein and his wife Chanie.
When hostages were being held at the Chabad House in Mumbai, Chein and Teman led an online effort that drove hundreds of phone calls to the White House to demand intervention.
The two also collaborated on a website which enabled kids to sign up for Shabbos meals, Sukkah, and handwashing sinks.
Teman attended the gala banquet of the International Kinus Hashluchim and gave a Dvar Torah at the National College Shabbaton in Crown Heights.
After graduating, Teman has done comedy shows for Chabad institutions, including the Aliya Center in Crown Heights.
Teman will receive $25,000 for his cause.
How are they anti-Chabad when they picked a vocal supporter of Chabad? Read the article above. The Federations also fund many Friendship Circle programs around the country. They are pro-Jew, and that includes Chabad where they are able to help. It is upon Chabad to reach-out to them,. Name-calling doesn’t help. Regarding Shmuley Yanklowitz, it would be to Chabad’s advantage to follow the same “A Jew is a Jew” philosophy we have for all people. He is a yid who is dedicated to protecting people, and protecting the trust people have in Kashrut. He did not strike out against Chabad,… Read more »
He will be performing at iVolunteer’s benefit on January 12th in Manhattan….thanks Ari!
Mazal Tov Ari! May you continue to grow in everything you do!!
please whats that got to do with “jewish hero’s?”
we as chassidim need to make our own! or at least give the other lubavitchers like 20k each!
On one hand I’m happy for the winner and congratulate him, but on the other hand I don’t think that they (AJC/Federation) feel warmly to Chabad, and if my feeling is correct, then that’s unfair. At least the Jew hater “Mr. – self proclamimed – Justice” didn’t win. I had a bad feeling they would award him.
While I believe the Friendship Circle has had far more of an impact than JCorps, indeed I never expected them to pick a Lubavitch shaliach. However, at least they did not pick the moiser S.Y.
i could of told you when it started they would never pick a lubavitcher. this program is anti chabad and anti lubavitch
Go Ari Go!!!!!
