Vaad Hakohol Chairman Zaki Tamir met with more than a dozen teachers and administrators of Crown Heights schools Wednesday morning.
The meeting explored the needs of local schools, and opportunities for collaboration with the Community Council and each other.
“I’m an attorney. I know nothing about what it takes to run a school,” Tamir said, “so it’s very important for us to be having this dialogue. I want to know what we can do to help our mosdos.”
Tamir stressed that everyone would gain from greater cooperation, especially in regards to government grants.
“Education spending in New York State is one of the only areas that has survived the financial crisis,” Tamir said. “We’ve got to take advantage of that.”
The meeting was the unofficial launch of the CHJCC’s Education Committee, intended to help mosdos pool resources and ideas. “There is a wealth of talent and experience in Crown Heights,” said Volunteer Committee Coordinator Yossi Moya, “there’s no question that if we share ideas that we’ll see real results.”
Shortly after his election last June, Tamir declared that building community volunteer committees was one of his priorities.
The CHJCC is now forming committees for: Business Networking & Employment, Community Outreach, Crisis Intervention, Education, Housing, Public Affairs, Real Estate, Safety, Technology and Youth Services. Committees to work directly with the CHJCC for the Beis Din, Kashrus and Mas Hakohol are also being formed.

It won’t happen, b/c then you wouldn’t be able to hire girls or young matrons from the community who have little or no degrees to teach english subjects.
This is my thought: Set up an independent “financial recommendation center” The way it would work is as follows, every parent that needs financial help would go to this one office (part of CHJCC). This they would do instead of having to deal directly with each of their children’s schools. An especially important point brought up was after-school activities for teens -and how the bigger schools might help the smaller schools access grants for this-and how this would benefit our girls and boys. There is a CH girls school on Troy Ave which calls parents every month, threatening parents with throwing out their children from school if they don’t pay up their monthly bill. It’s not just a one time thing. They doe this each and every month to each and every parent who falls behind, if even just 1 month behind in their tuition bill. According to the Alter Rebbe’s Hilchos Talmud Torah, the responsibility of Chinuch is on the entire community. This means that it’s the Halachic Obligation of the Vaad Hakohol of C.H. to take make sure that no student is thrown out of school for any reason, regardless if the reasoning is lack of financial ability by the parents to be able to pay or if the problem is that the child is “not so bright” or has learning difficulty or learning disabilities, or even if he or she is lacking in Yiras Shomayim or in other appropriate behavior. I totally agree, people grow up, you sound like immature babies. You don’t like your kids school, put him or her somewhere else, (oh, you can’t afford tuition somewhere else??? Interesting…are you the same ppl who complain tuition is too expensive here…well I guess there are no shortage of excuses) OR get involved and do something to help improve your child’s school. I cannot understand why the schools do not get funding from the government as in the UK.You just pay for kodesh studies.From what i hear there is such an enormous pressure on parents aside from education.Of course a good education is tantamount and parents must have a say in where their kids spend 7 or so hours a day.But isnt that what one pays taxes for?

You are right in regard to those that lease cars and have bungalows in Evergreen. It is a chutzpa for these families to demand scholarships; even more so, for the hanholah to give them their tuition breaks. The question, though, is what about those families who can’t afford winter coats for their children this year? Do you think they need to pay for school too? as a parent of children in both boys and girls schools I have come to realize that these kinds of meetings unfortunately do not help our children, they do however help with the bottom line in someone else’s bank accounts. There is only one way that parents can make a difference, its school vouchers, however, schools would rather get government grants since they do not have to answer to anyone.
