FREEHOLD, NJ – On July 29, 2010, Amit Bornstein, age 22 of Marlboro was arrested at his home by Monmouth County Sheriff’s Officers on a bench warrant for failing to appear in Court for minor misdemeanor and traffic infractions.
Seven hours later Correction Officers dropped Amit’s dead body at CentraState Hospital. Little is known about what happened while in custody, as surveillance tapes were seized by the Prosecutor’s Office and have not been released.
Two months after Amit’s death, Sherriff Shaun Golden has yet to make any statement about the incident; now the Bornstein family is demanding accountability for the death of their son.
According to investigators at least eight (8) Correction Officers were involved in the incident.
Though the CO’s initially claimed Mr. Bornstein “tossed them around like dolls,” autopsy photos show that Amit was shackled and beaten to death after asking to make a phone call home.
Amit’s family and neighbors are demanding the release of the county jail video and audio tapes, and a fair and full investigation into his death, with appropriate disciplinary and criminal charges filed against his killers.
The Warden, Sheriff and Corrections Officers’ Union have been silent or have stated that “they followed procedures” and the no one “can prove any wrongdoing” – THEN HOW DID HE DIE? AND IS IT STANDARD PROCEDURE TO SHACKLE AND BEAT PRISONERS TO DEATH?
In response to the silence from the Sherriff’s office, a second rally is being organized for Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 7:00 pm in Manalapan to demand scrutiny of officer misconduct, human rights violations and to demonstrate concerns over the mismanagement of the jail by Monmouth County’s Sheriff’s Office. The family is also asking witnesses to come forward with any helpful information.
We are asking for all concerned people and organizations to rally with us against officer brutality and for the protection of human rights.
Buses will be providing transportation for folks throughout the city (Manhattan and Brooklyn) — e-mail [email protected] for pickup locations.
If we all ask at once, the Sheriff’s Office will hear our demand to release the surveillance video from the jail, and for a full and fair investigation of Amit’s case.
This rally is also endorsed by the October 22 Coalition and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice.
Look clearly Amit got upset as the caretaker for his younger brother who seems to be autistic. Parents were in Israel. Amit probably did not show up for the minor hearing because he was taking care of brother. The deputies being untrained and just plain uncaring enraged Amit by indicating they were going to give brother to unidentified people. Amit no doubt flipped out and rather than bring in someone who knew how to deal with the issues decided to brutalized torture strip and murder this 22 year old. I am pro police but this video which they tried to… Read more »
Has anyone emailed [email protected] to see what the Jewish community can do?
Omg this is not normal lets do some thing about it
crazy
is this what U call a police man. police are not meant to bash people up to death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
baruch hadayin emes
unbelievable.
i hope that this becomes an expose and that justice will be done.
ever heard the story of mr.federman? he was murdered in his home by local police in California many years ago.
#31, Again, like someone said already, You only know what he said to whoever called. You dont know what he said to other people. Or did other things.
how cum we didnt hear about this terrible tradegdy?
I grew up in Crown Heights, though I am not a Hasid. It was always clear to me that bullies grew up to become either criminals or policemen. That is not to say that all policemen are thugs but the power to physically dominate the people around them is a great attraction for that type of personality. Get them on a day when they are not finding satisfaction at home or lost a big bet at Belmont that weekend and you could be very unlucky. Best to avoid them if you can. No doubt Bornstein, being an Israeli, did not… Read more »
What ‘money to ‘back the Rubashkin name’? there is no ‘money’. And maybe the shliavch replied honestly when he said he didn’t know about it. Let’s be rational & stop jumping to conclusions.
How come many of us never heard about this and it happened about 3 months ago already. Was there anything in the news about this?
Anyway, NO JUSTICE NO PEACE…………….
The fact is that we all know that the local shliach was called, from C.H. (on the phone), regarding THIS particular effort, about this very demonstration_rally, where a Bus from 770 came to help while he was silent. The Local shliach was asked on the phone (Tuesday Evening) by a local C.H. caller, if he was involved in a call for this Demonstration_Rally and he said “he knew nothing about it”. Now think about this: Everyone in CH knew about it, everyone is 770 was asked to come and the local Chabad Shliach “knows nothing about it” and didn’t even… Read more »
IN THE OFFICIAL STATUS OF A “PROTECTED MINORITY” (against racial discrimination )UNDER FEDERAL STATUTE,JUST LIKE BLACKS. YOU MUST LOOK INTO WHAT THE REBBE DID THIS FOR.you must talk to the people that remember this fact.YOU MUST TAKE THIS INFORMATION TO THE ACLU , AND SUE THE POLICE FOR A RACE CRIME UNDER THIS LAW. NO ONE KNEW WHY THE REBBE INSISTED ON PUSHING FOR THIS. IT CAN ALSO APPLY TO RUBASHKIN.
Take a page out of the book of history. Jewish people and leaders need to protest this to the strongest possible extent. Ofcourse not riot but make sure this can never happen again, we need to stand up for ourselves.
#16 and my parents are the shluchim there. My father has worked non stop with this family and has been there for everything they need. I believe it important to know before you speak out.
THIS PROBLEM IS EVERY JEW’S PROBLEM. WE ALL NEED TO MAKE THE GREATEST EFFORTS TO STOP A VERY DISTURBING TREND.
I’ll give this story legs. I will blog about it and send to some Jewish agencies. If this man was moslem, the lame media would be all over it. “Never again” is here.
because i dont live in americia
My parents are the local shluchim there in nj. Mabe the organizers should contact the local shluchim in advance so they do not have to learn of it from col after the fact.
Yes, everyone who can, COME!!! enough talking, TIME TO ACT!!!! IS THIS JUSTICE?? THIS IS JUSTICE??? THIS IS JUSTICE????
Yes #16, you are missing something. Silence? your wrong. You only know what they did not say, Not what they did.
to #14-of course #11 is right! Whats new? And yes, #3, this happened in america. #7-Rubashkin? Thats it? shall I list 50 things that happened in america?
this is soo disturbing- how can we let this go?
i am sure you are not a shliach as your tone depicts a very bitter spirit! did you know of this story before reading this? didn’t think so! so now go judge the shluchim who OF COURSE should have known about this. loosen up dude! appreciate the rebbe’s front line.
This is our Brother, This is our Family, This is our Blood
Time to unite, and send a strong message.
Somebody will have to answer fot this, at any price. NOW
This is the kind of story that usually has legs. They are afraid of bad publicity, especially in an election year. The cop is probably family of some big wig.The only motive that comes to mind here is hate.He probably demanded his rights, and some young nazi ( of any color de jour) responded with brutality. Then the cover up started .The chief should be fired. The mayor should be picketed and recalled. Police union should be sued.
The silence is deafening. If what is stated is true, then how is it possible that absolutely no known Jewish Organization has joined in support to demonstrate against the injustice? Even the Local Chabad Shliach has not issued his official vocal nor written support to this effort? Is this real? Or is there something wrong with this picture? The local Chabad Shliach is silent and we have to send busses from 770??? The victim was a Jew who had no connection to Chabad, yet no Jewish Organization and no Shliach cares to sign their name to this call for justice?… Read more »
imagine how his family feels the menthey tought thier children to trust kill them instead
Sorry to say but, #11 is on target!
I’m sure Zaki Tamir can help. How can a person pass away and there is no accountability???? All questionable deaths must be investigated by the DA’s office. Where did the breakdown occur???
proven over and over again throughout history
it would be interesting to know what the race of the officers are… isreali government should become involved and demand a full investigation.
if you want there to be a swift response just say that amit was black
this happens to blacks and other minorities as well, and to whites as well. power corrups. it’s part of the system.
as of now all people able to come should please come to 770 buses will be leaving today @ 4:30pm be there for your brother
Are we obligated to leave crown heights to demonstrate? Any mashpiim / rabonim have insight on this?
if rubashkin can happen in america, this can happen in america
They should go back to russia
this is not the first and wont be the last, this can happen anytime anywhere. the govt can do what they want how they want when they want. dont think it can only happen to rubashkin in postville or to man in NJ, there are alot of stories of cops killing people and then trying to cover it up. when they get hurt they are the hero when they hurt others nobody knows anything
You have to write the full story, this isn’t everything, there must be more information, the story you write sounds like something that happened in Communist Russia during the purges or Nazi Germany, you don’t want people to start rioting, you have to provide more details.
This happened in America?
this is completely crazy
