Over 400 children attended Lubavitch Day Camp in the UK this year – the biggest yet.
Last year the theme of 39 melochos was a major hit. This year, with camp ending so close to Rosh Hashanah, the theme chosen was Tishrei. Each child received an exclusively designed Tishrei calendar magnet, and there were special ‘seals’ the children were able to earn for showing proficiency in each of the holidays.
“Chodesh Tishrei is like a country fair, where we buy all kinds of merchandise and unpack it during the year.”
In camp, the children were imbued with the joys of Tishrei and had a summer full of toichen and fun. The campers experienced Tishrei like never before. They “visited the king in the field” by exploring an ancient castle, dating to 1088. They went wading in the river with Tashlich fish and picked apples for Rosh Hashanah. An apiarist visited camp to teach the children about the life of a bee and show them how to extract honey from a beehive.
Have you ever seen the inside of an Esrog? Or compared it with a lemon? Have you ever made a real, working, kosher Shofar? Have you ever made honey? Have you made paper, from scratch, for a Shana Tovah card? Or made a musical instrument for Simchas Beis Hashoeva? Would you rather hold your own chicken this year, after learning how to do it when the animals came to camp?
Well, if you were a camper at Lubavitch Day Camp, chances are that the answer to all these questions is yes! Now that our calendars are complete, we understand and are prepared for the wonderful month ahead.
Of course, they also packed in all the ingredients that make camp such fun: trips to the countryside, fire station, parks, museums, Gambado, Kidz Adventure Zone, Hayes Hill Farm, Chessington World of Adventures and special for the Teen Camp, the grand trip to Stubbers, where they went rock climbing, jeep driving and jet skiing.
There were also many fun camp wide events, such as: swimming, ice cream parties, dress up days, juggling shows, crafts, drama, building, music and so much more.
Now as the children head back to school, it will be obvious to parents and teachers that campers from Lubavitch Day Camp are all ready for Tishrei.
