Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly presided over the NYPD’s annual High Holiday security briefing at One Police Plaza Tuesday morning.
As it has every year since 9/11, the NYPD will increase security to protect New York’s Jewish community on Rosh Hashanah, which starts at sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Yom Kippur, beginning at sundown on Friday, Sept. 10.
“While we have no specific threats against New York City currently, every year at this time we increase patrols in certain areas with large populations of Jewish people as well as synagogues and other Jewish houses of worship,” Kelly said.
Some synagogues throughout the city will receive unannounced visits from the NYPD’s Hercules units, which consist of heavily armed counter-terrorism officers, the commissioner added.
In August 2010, Inspector Peter Simonetti, Commanding Officer for the 71st Precinct, told key officials in Crown Heights that “770 is a number one target and we are focused on making sure nothing happens.”
“People in the community should know that if they see anything out of the ordinary – they should not decide for themselves, but should call us right away because you never know,” Simonetti told COLlive.com.
Thousands of guests are expected in Brooklyn during the Hebrew month of Tishrei.
Looks like an old file photo of Kelly with Lt. Cantwell. not from the briefing. Who was there? Why no photos of the Crown Heights leadership from the meeting?
