The Jewish community in Bryansk, Russia, led by Rabbi Menachem Mendel and Rivkah Zaklas, welcomed a new Sefer Torah Sunday, the first in the last 100 years.
The Torah was written to unite the Shluchim of Russia and in memory of Rabbi Gavriel and Rivky Holtzberg, obm.
Members of the community were invited to inscribed the last letters in the Sefer Torah, and the donors received certificates of honor.
The new Torah was paraded through the city’s streets accompanied by music and dancing, along with the entire community who turned out to escort the Torah to its new home in the central shul.
The writing of the unity Sefer Torah was organized by Shliach Menachem Mendel Rabinowitz of Nizhny, Novgorod, who arranged for shluchim from throughout the region to participate, and was overeen by head Shliach to Russia Rabbi Berel Lazar.
