By Warren Berke – Chairperson of Community Board 9’s Parks, Recreation And Culture Committee
Congratulations to Rabbi Jacob Goldstein and his associates for their work on changing the parking times. As he states in his letter on COLlive.com, he worked on it for 34 years and was unsuccessful.
What changed, why did this finally happen?
The change happened because Community Board 9 advocated on behalf of the entire community through CB9’s Environmental Protection Committee under the Chairmanship of Rabbi Yaacov Behrman and committee members Mendy Margolin, Yankee Pearson, and Hannah West.
The Community Board received requests from all segments of the community to remove Saturday street cleaning. This change will benefit the entire community. No one wants to wake up early on a Saturday morning to move their car.
State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, and Council Member Laurie Cumbo, all supported CB9’s effort to reduce street cleaning.
As the committee’s meeting minutes, and the NYC formal documentation announcing the 3-month pilot program attests, Community Board 9 and the Environmental Protection Committee lobbied successfully for this community benefit.
If the community members identified by Rabbi Goldstein also lobbied for this change, then they deserve appreciation as well.
See letter from sanitation below:
“Dear Rabbi Behrman and Ms. Martinez,
As a result of numerous requests made over the past few years to review the Saturday Alternate Side of the Street Cleaning regulations (ASP) along Eastern Parkway, an inter-agency discussion took place between the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit and the Departments of Sanitation (DSNY) and Transportation (DOT) regarding the establishment of a pilot program to test the impacts of temporary suspension of Saturday ASP cleaning regulations.
While we are sure you are pleased that sign changes for such a program were implemented, they did occur sooner than expected.
Prior to the change, we anticipated a discussion with the local elected officials, the Community Boards and other stakeholders. A key component of that discussion is the initiation of an educational campaign to remind and encourage property owners and building managers along Eastern Parkway to regularly maintain their sidewalks and curb/gutter area (the area 18 inches into the street).
We will be monitoring cleanliness and Enforcement will be regularly checking conditions.
We would like to follow up further with local elected officials, the Community Boards, and other stakeholders regarding a broad campaign about regularly maintaining cleanliness along Eastern Parkway.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Henry A. Ehrhardt
Director, Bureau of Community Affairs – NYC Department of Sanitation”
People, we are approaching the 3 weeks and I believe at this time, a little ahavas yisroel and lchaf zchus goes a long way. Who ever made efforts towards this initiative, before during and after can gladly get credit. Rather than dis-credit, lets take the high road as there is enough credit for all.
Have a good week going forward
The facts are Reb Chanina Sperlin and Eli Cohen have laid the groundwork AND done all the thankless work to get this done. To have some bochur that recently got appointed to boards take this credit is ludicrous. This article is an attempt to refute what was clearly written a couple of articles ago on collive by Col. GOLDSTEIN.
Stick to the facts, not emotions.
People let’s be honest and give credit where credit is due, these people give there life’s to help the community, but have not accomplished anything in the past, they finnaly got a street sign changed and you don’t want to give them credit ???
but honestly, when will the community council start working on AFFORDABLE HOUSING for this community? for the poor, for the large families for the single parents, so many years… and?
Next project is to get city to remove muni-meters from Troy Avenue. On one side there are no stores until Union St. If they remove the meters there will be more parking available for residents who live there.
Mendy was the driving force behind the Shabbas street cleaning suspection. He was upset ever since living by his Liberman cousins on Eastern Parkway. Thank you mendy!!
Being good and noble, is being appreciative and thanking the people responsible for bettering your community.
THANK YOU RABBIS SPERLIN and COHEN.
Being bad and unappreciative, is denying the facts, and writing self serving letters, patting one self’s on the back.
SHAME ON YOU _ _
Our appreciation to Rabbi Jake Goldstein, is way and Long Overdue!!!!
For his services to this great country, and his services to this (could be, and should be) great community!!!
I am taking my lesson from Jake’s humility, in giving credit to where credit is due, to Rabbi Sperlin and Rabbi Cohen. In spite of declaring that he tried for the longest, to get the parking corrected.
Reb Yannkel
חזק ואמץ
I am truly offended. The torch has been passed – why can’t both people be praised ? Yacov’s phone does not stop ringing with urgent requests for help from morning til night. He is a sincere, devoted and gifted young man.
So what is your point? That Jacob Goldstein did not work/accomplish this item?
As a result of numerous requests made over the last few years…….
This NEW group has been there just RECENTLY!!!
Looking in the mirror and saying, you did a good job.
I hope the CHJCC was involved in making these needed changes. That said Reb Yaakov Behrman should be applauded for really moving this plan along.
once you are asking , why can’t we have we have cleaning twice on each side when there are so many streets that have it once on each side.
why can’t they recognize that our stores are closed on erev shabbos and just stop ticketing us after 2 or 3pm.
It feels like we are being treated unfairly and still being asked to be thankful. we are thankfull but would also appreciate more consideration.
Have you been to the CB lately?
A lot of tax payers money to a lot of “Do nothings”
Time to cut off their funding!!!!
Rabbi Goldstein = ACTION
Or
YB= FLUFF
You decide!!!!!
Thank you!! A real Askan and devoted wholeheartedly to the community!
